On love and {sometimes liquid} courage. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Black Raz Old Fashioned

Black Raz Old Fashioned

To be honest, I’m not the biggest fan of Valentine’s Day (gasp!). So, when I needed inspiration for a Valentine’s post, I went looking to the one I love, because that’s what the holiday is about, after all.   A few weeks ago, J and I decided to ditch our usual foodie routine and we headed to a local rock climbing gym for a date night. It was during my January Whole30 so I was happy to do something out of the ordinary and he is always pleased to be involved in some sport or physical activity. The week unfolded and our excitement grew.

We made the 30-minute drive after work on a Friday and bustled in the door, eager to get started, spend some quality time, and share a few laughs. We tied on our arguably dorky and rented climbing shoes, strapped on our chalk packs and quite literally, grabbed the ropes.

He climbed first and scaled the beginner wall within seconds, and I took the role of the ground person, feeding him the rope. When it was my turn to climb, my nervousness bubbled up, and I shook while climbing the first wall. I made it to the top and slowly lowered to the ground. Do you know that feeling when your fear builds after you’ve actually accomplished something and you feel like you can never do it again? Yeah, that happened.

We moved to a more difficult spot; he climbed and I let my anxiety fester. I made it halfway through the next wall and I was stuck. “I look like an idiot”, I thought. I looked around for the next logical rock, which was nowhere in reach. I looked down at him and said, “I can’t make it up, let me down”. To my surprise, he yelled up and said “Nope, you’re not coming down, I’ll hold you up there all night if I have to. You can do this. Just slow down, take a breath, and figure it out. You could do any wall in this place if you put your mind to it”. You know what happened? I made it to the top.

Drinking an Old Fashioned

There are a lot of mixed opinions associated with being in a relationship in your twenties. “This is supposed to be your time to travel, explore, learn and create your own identity”, they say (who the heck are they??!). And I truly get this. As much as one person can bring feelings of happiness, they cannot truly make you happy unless you were, to begin with. However, never in my life have I ever been given this much encouragement and room to grow as a person and to be courageous with my goals. And for that, I can really only thank one person (yep, hey J that’s you!). Today, I’m so blessed to be able to celebrate that love and support.

Man drinking an Old Fashioned

As I explained earlier, I’m not really a big Valentines person, so lucky for me, J’s birthday is February 16th. We celebrate  V-day a bit, but really, it’s usually the start of his birthday festivities. And I am a BIG birthday celebrator.  Old Fashioneds are his favorite cocktail, and sometimes I like to funk things up with a twist on a special occasion. Alas, this crazy cocktail creation was born and I hope it spurs you to celebrate your sweetheart – serve this for Valentine’s Day or every occasion in between. I’ll provide two variations below. Once is stronger (a classic Old Fashion the way J likes it), and a lighter version that someone with a lower tolerance (like me) can get along with!

Blackberry Raspberry Old Fashioned

So, Happy Birthday & Valentine’s Day to the one who loves me, and gives me the courage to climb and try again. Cheers to you, my old fashioned kinda guy.
