This mulled wine recipe will warm your heart and knock your socks off it’s so good. 5 simple ingredients come together on the stove or in a crockpot for a cup of cheer.
To me, this mulled wine is the ULTIMATE Christmas cocktail. It takes minimal effort, it makes a buncha booze & it is the coziest thing you’ve ever tasted. I’m writing this (wayyyy too late at night) and all I want is a steaming mug of it and a fire. A girl can dream, can’t she?
Anywho, you can bet this is going at the top of my Christmas to make list. I’m planning on making this mulled wine recipe on Christmas Eve & Christmas Day, we’re hosting both sides of our families this year and this will be easy peasy for me to make for all of them.
Also on the list is my chocolate pie, my winter fruit salad, maybe my fave roasted bruschetta dip and hmmmm…I’ve got to think about what else to add.
What’s in mulled wine?
That’s easy! Just some wine (duh), apple cider, some sort of sweetener, and spices to start with.
Instead of sugar, I’m using apple cider and maple syrup to sweeten, mulling spices to flavor and a bit of Grand Marnier for citrus and depth of flavor.
This is a good time to use an inexpensive bottle of wine, I normally go with Pinot Noir, even though I’m more of a Cabernet/Malbec girl, I like the lighter flavor here.
What are mulling spices?
Ah, you caught the addition of mulling spices. What are those things? They’re ususally a blend of cinnamon, clove, nutmeg an allspice. It’s a really warming blend I like to add to hot cider…and mulled wine!
How do you make mulled wine?
This is the easy part. You add everything, excpet the alcohol, to a big ole pot and let it simmer together and infuse the flavors. Then, you turn the heat to low (when the liquid in the pot is very hot), and pour the alcohol into the pot.
Just make sure this doesn’t boil, so you don’t cook off the alcohol and you’re golden, sister.
You’re going to be the start of the partay. Love cozy cocktails? Check out my Irish Coffee recipe!
Print5 Ingredient Mulled Wine
This 5 Ingredient Mulled Wine will warm your heart and knock your socks off it’s so good. 5 simple ingredients come together on the stove or in a crockpot for a cup of cheer.
- Prep Time: 5 minutes
- Cook Time: 10 minutes
- Total Time: 15 minutes
- Yield: 12-14 servings 1x
- Category: Cocktail
- Method: Stovetop
- Cuisine: American
Ingredients
- 4 cups apple cider
- 1/4 cup mulling spices, I like this kind
- 3 Tbsp. maple syrup
- 1 – 1.5L bottle of dry red wine, I used a Pinot Noir
- 1/2 cup Grand Marnier
- Optional – cinnamon sticks & orange slices for garnish
Instructions
- Add the apple cider and mulling spices to a large stockpot.
- Turn the heat to medium and heat, stirring occasionally. Do not let this boil.
- When it starts to steam, turn the heat to low and pour in the wine and Grand Marnier.
- As soon as this heats through (carefully test with a spoon), turn the heat off and cover. Again, do not let this boil.*
- Strain out the mulling spices.
- Serve immediately in mugs or glasses with cinnamon sticks and orange slices.
Notes
- If you’re not serving this all at once, heat occasionally on low heat with the lid on or transfer it to a slow cooker set to warm.
- You could even make this in the slow cooker by adding everything and turning it to low heat and turning the dial to keep warm when you’re through.
- You can cut this batch in half or double it based on your needs. It’s very forgiving.
