There’s no better time to bake fruit pies and fruit filled desserts than the warm weather months…because berries are in season! But, heating up your kitchen with the oven can be a real drag, so why not make a Traeger Pie, aka bake a pie on your wood pellet grill!
That’s right, your wood pellet grill/smoker isn’t just for smoking meat. You can make and even bake all kinds of things right on yours. I have a Traeger Pro 575 and I’m always trying out something new, like this pizza recipe…and I’ve even done my Thanksgiving Sweet Potato Casserole on there!

What’s the difference in making a Traeger pie than an oven-baked pie?
There’s actually not that much difference between baking a pie on the Traeger than in the oven. The great thing about Traeger and wood pellet grills is that you can control the temperature and keep it steady. Instead of a gas or electric line, the grills use wood pellets for fuel, and it operates very similarly to an oven.
The real difference is the flavor. When you make a Traeger pie, you do get a kiss of smokey flavor, that’s actually super delicious with buttery pie crust and rich filling.

What’s the difference between baking pie on a wood pellet grill vs a gas or charcoal grill?
It’s a bit tougher to bake on a gas or charcoal grill because the temperature isn’t as easily controlled. Baking on a Traeger is all indirect heat, but you can crank up the grill to a high temperature.
On a gas or charcoal grill, whatever your grilling is either directly above a flame or indirectly next to it. You don’t really want to bake on direct heat, but it’s hard to know exactly what temperature the indirect heat zone on a grill is.

So, how do you do it?
Baking a Traeger pie is just as easy as baking a pie in the oven. Get a great pie crust recipe (download my Ultimate Pie Baking Guide for more pie crust tips), roll it out, pour in whatever filling you’re using & voila! You’re ready to bake.
What kind of tools do you need?
You don’t need anything special to bake a pie on the Traeger. You can use what you normally would in the oven, but these few tools make a bit of difference:
Baking sheet – Whenever I bake fruit pies, I place the pie plate on a baking sheet because the filling usually bubbles over. If you use a baking sheet, the filling bubbles onto the sheet and doesn’t make a sticky mess on the grill. Just a note, you may want to use an older baking sheet since it will be on the grill.
Cast iron pie plate – this isn’t a must, but I really love using a cast iron pie plate. I like the way the cast iron bakes the pie and sometimes the Traeger is a little dirtier than my oven so the black pan is welcome.
Pie crust saver – this is great for any type of pie baking. I start baking most of my fruit pies at 425F and then finish them at 350F. Sometimes, the crust bakes faster than the filling so this prevents the crust from getting too brown. If you have a lattice-top pie, you can even use this to hold a piece of foil in place so the lattice doesn’t burn.

What types of pie can you bake?
I like fruit pies best on the Traeger. You can really bake anything on there, but these pies/tarts are my favorite to make outdoors:
- Blueberry Pie
- Strawberry Pie
- Apple Cranberry Pie
- Peach Blueberry Crumble Pie
- Black Raspberry Pie
- Classic Apple Pie
- Quadruple Berry Pie
- Chocolate Chip Cookie Pie (not fruit but it would work GREAT)
- Pecan Pie (not fruit but it would work GREAT)
- Rustic Apple Galette (just bake this on a baking sheet on the grill!)
- Paleo Peach Basil Tart
- Paleo Blueberry Tart
- Gluten-Free Peach Crisp (not pie but would be SO easy)
- Gluten-Free Berry Skillet Crisp (not pie but would be SO easy)
